Army general defends rules for detainees

11/20/09: CNN reports that the military released 77,000 of about 87,000 detainees locked up during the Iraq war because there was not enough evidence to hold them.

09/01/09: Jurist reports that the US has released more than 5,000 Iraqi prisoners and transferred more than 1,000 more to Iraqi control in 2009, according to a Sunday statement by the US-led Multinational Force in Iraq. This year's releases and transfers, conducted in accordance with the Status of Forces Agreement, brings the number of prisoners detained by US forces in Iraq below 9,000 for the first time since March 2005.
