11/04/09: Government Executive reports that Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs ranking member Susan Collins, R-Maine, on Monday called for creating a Senate-confirmed director of federal cybersecurity who would be based at the Homeland Security Department rather than the White House. Collins, who is drafting cybersecurity legislation, is opposed to creating a White House "czar" to manage cybersecurity efforts, putting her at odds with Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn. 10/24/09: The Miami Herald reports that an intelligence official says the National Security Agency will build a secretive electronic data center, dedicated to protecting the nation from cyber-attacks, at a National Guard camp in Utah.
09/16/09: The Washington Post reports that Director of National Intelligence Dennis C. Blair said counterintelligence and cybersecurity would be given new emphasis under a four-year strategic plan he unveiled Tuesday. The objectives outlined in the new National Intelligence Strategy, he said, "can only be carried out by an intelligence community that is agile, adaptive and united."
08/13/09: The Washington Times reports that the resignation last week of two of the government's top cybersecurity officials has raised questions about President Obama's much-touted effort to fix policy for defending the nation's computer networks. Officials say the decisions by Melissa Hathaway of the National Security Council and Mischel Kwon of the Department of Homeland Security are not related, but some observers have linked them to suggest the White House is faltering in its effort to implement a new cybersecurity strategy and appoint a high-level national coordinator for the issue.
