07/11/12: Secrecy News reports Judge Raymond J. Dearie of the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York has been appointed to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court by Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr. The eleven-member FISA court rules on applications for domestic intelligence surveillance and physical search under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, and decisions denying applications are reviewed by the rarely-convened Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review. Judge Dearie replaces Judge Malcolm Howard, whose seven-year term expired on May 18, 2012. His appointment last week was confirmed Tuesday by FISA Court spokesman Sheldon L. Snook. Judge Dearie was appointed to the federal bench by President Reagan in 1986.
