Israel Air Force archives reveal US spy planes repeatedly violated Israeli airspace in 1950's

08/31/12: Haaretz reports new information published by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) revealed this week that American U-2 espionage planes repeatedly entered Israeli airspace in the 1950’s for a series of secret spy missions.  At the time, Israel’s defense establishment was baffled by the entrance of high-flying crafts, cruising at altitudes of about 70,000 feet, and code named “Jules Verne.”  Israeli officials reported each incident to the air force’s top brass, as well as to the IDF’s command.  According to documents released by the air force’s archives due to be published later this week, it was the USSR that aided Israeli officials in finally exposing the identity of the mystery planes after an American U-2 was shot down over Soviet soil.
