SEC outlines requirement that companies report cyber theft and attack

10/16/11: The Washington Post reports that cyberspies and criminals steal what is estimated to be tens of billions of dollars worth of data from US companies each year. Yet experts say few companies report these losses to shareholders. Now the Securities and Exchange Commission is pressing for more disclosure, issuing new guidelines this week that make clear that publicly traded companies must report significant instances of cybertheft or attack, or even when they are at material risk of such an event.

2010 Law and national security writing competition

08/06/10: The American Bar Association Standing Committee on Law and National Security has announced the 2010 National Security Law Student Writing Competition “National Security in a Globalized World".  The competition is open to all students who are in attendance at an ABA accredited law school between September 1, 2009 and August 15, 2010.

Employment: Visiting International Law Professor position at JHU-SAIS Nanjing University Center

09/03/09: Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies invites applications for a one-year renewable position as a Visiting Professor of International Law at its international and area studies graduate institute, jointly administered with Nanjing University in Nanjing, China, with the appointment to begin in September 2010 .

Employment: Brennan Center seeks counsel for Liberty and National Security Project

09/03/09: The Brennan Center for Justice's Liberty & National Security Project is looking for a mid-level counsel (3+ years of experience) to help with its advocacy, litigation, and public education efforts. The primary areas of work would be government secrecy & accountability, privacy and ethnic/religious profiling, and detention policy. The position is located in Washington, DC and requires occasional travel to New York.

Employment: United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court

07/03/09: The United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court invites applications for the position of Counsel to the Court. The Court invites applications from attorneys who have a current security clearance with significant legal experience, and is particularly interested in individuals who have an expertise in national security law, Constitutional law, or communications technology and the law. 05/22/09: The Constitution Project seeks a Policy Counsel, who will work with high-level experts to develop consensus reports and recommendations for policy reforms, and promote the reforms through advocacy and public education campaigns.

ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security releases report, student writing competition

05/12/09: The ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security has released its March/April report. The report includes an essay entitled "In Looking Back to Go Forward: Remaking U.S. Detainee Policy" by James M. Durant III and Frank Anechiarico, professors at the U.S. Air Force Academy, discuss the history of detainee policy.It also includes an essay entitled "In Tying Our Hands in Combating International Money Laundering: The United States Should Loosen the Restraints, But Do So Carefully" by attorney Ethan S. Burger    

05/12/09: The ABA Standing Committee on Law and National Security has announced its 2009 Law Student Writing Competition, "Advancing Liberty in the 21st Century While Preserving National Security." The competition seeks to encourage scholarly debate regarding current issues related to detaining and prosecuting terrorists; the impact of the nation’s immigration policy on National Security; the status of international treaties and their impact on National Security; as well as the many issues related to the area of surveillance and intelligence gathering.

Employment: DoD Office of General Counsel

03/23/09: The DoD Office of General Counsel is soliciting resumes for multiple attorney term positions. Successful applicants will be part of an interagency team representing the government in over 200 habeas corpus petitions filed in D.C. Employment: Two job postings at DHS

The Department of Homeland Security has two new job postings:

• Strategic Studies and Analysis Division has posted an opening for a Program Analyst at the GS-13/14 level to serve in the Office of Strategic Plans.
• The Office of Foreign Investment and Trade, which deals with CFIUS, Telecom, and Trade matters for DHS Policy, has posted an opening for a Senior Policy Analyst at the GS-14 level.  Candidates should apply by March 6, 2009.
